Instagram location tags: how to add a place, find nearby posts and hide your own

An Instagram location tag is a venue or city name the author picks for a post, reel or story. It is not the same as location access on your phone: those are separate settings, switched off in separate spots. Below, step by step: how to add and remove a tag, how to search by location and on the map, and what tags do for a business.

In short

An Instagram location tag is a venue the author picks, and it has nothing to do with location access on the phone. Add it before sharing or later through Edit, and use the Location sticker in stories. Search on location pages and on the Instagram Map, where tagged content stays for 24 hours. Remove tags one by one, turn off map sharing in the app and close location access in phone settings.

What a location tag is on Instagram

One word in the app covers three different things. One person turns off location access and assumes the café on old photos is now hidden. Another avoids tags altogether, although a tag says nothing about the phone.

  • The tag. The name of a venue, street or city on a post, reel or story. Anyone who can see the content can see the tag.
  • Location access. A permission in your phone settings. Without it the suggestions list stays empty when you try to add a tag.
  • Location sharing on the map. A separate feature: friends you pick see the spot where you last opened the app. It is off by default.

The main difference is who decides and when. You add a tag yourself, one upload at a time. Location access and map sharing get switched on once and then run without you. So blocking access on the phone leaves old tags in place, and a tag does not reveal where the phone is.

How to add a location

A tag goes on before you share or later on a live upload. Instagram Help is direct: you can only tag existing locations, and new ones cannot be created.

To a post or reel

For photos, Instagram Help lists three steps.

  1. On the last screen before sharing, tap Add location.
  2. Type the name and select it from the suggestions.
  3. Tap Share.

For a reel, the location field sits on the same screen as the caption and people tags, the reels help page shows. Our guide to posting reels covers the rest of the upload.

Forgot the tag: add it later. Tap Options, then Edit and Add Location, and save with Done. The help page on editing a location gives the full order.

An empty suggestions list means the app has no location access. Instagram Help says to leave the app and adjust location settings for Instagram on your device.

To a story

In stories, the tag goes on as a sticker. Take a shot, tap Stickers at the top of the screen and choose Location. Instagram Help covers the other stickers, and our guide to Instagram stories explains the format.

A tagged story has a second audience: the map. According to the help page on where stories appear, a story with a tagged location shows up on the map for your followers. Tagged content stays there for 24 hours, the Instagram blog says. When the map launched in India in October 2025, Meta added a reminder. It appears as you pick a tag.

How to find posts by location

Search by location runs through the general search bar and through the map.

Searching for a place

Meta's Transparency Center lists what Instagram search returns: hashtags, places, reels, posts, profiles and audio. Instagram Help gives two ways to open a location page: search for it, or tap the tag on someone's upload.

  1. Type the name of a venue, park or street into search.
  2. In the results, pick the location rather than an account with a similar name.
  3. Scroll the page that opens.

A location page includes public photos and videos shared with that location, Instagram Help explains. Private profiles are absent. The comparison of public and private accounts says no one sees their content on location pages.

The Instagram Map

Instagram introduced the map on August 6, 2025, starting with people in the US. In October 2025 it reached India. You find it at the top of your DM inbox, and it shows three kinds of content:

  • Reels, posts and stories with a tag from accounts you follow, each for 24 hours.
  • Notes from people you follow mutually, also for 24 hours.
  • Spots of friends who chose to share their location with you.

A location page keeps every public upload with the tag, while the map shows what is fresh from the last day.

How to remove a tag and turn off location access

On a public account, tagged content is visible to anyone on Instagram, according to the same help page. It lands on the location page, and a tagged story also lands on your followers' map. A month of stories from one courtyard says more about your address than any phone setting. Privacy gets protected in three spots: your uploads, the map and the phone itself.

Tags on posts and stories

You can take a tag off a live upload at any time. Tap Options in the top right, then Edit, Remove and Done. Instagram Help adds that your profile privacy setting decides who can see content tagged at a location. Old tags come off the same way, one at a time.

Stories are easier: skip the sticker before sharing. If a story already went live with a tag, delete it and share it again without the sticker.

The map

Location sharing on the map stays off unless you opt in, the Instagram blog says. When you turn it on, you pick the circle: followers you follow back, Close Friends, selected people or no one. You can also skip sharing in specific places or with specific people. Your spot updates when you open the app, and you can turn sharing off at any time.

A marker at the top of the map helps you check yourself. With the India launch, Meta made it persistent: it shows whether you are sharing your location right now. Profile photos were also removed from tagged content on the map, so a tag is not mistaken for where a person is.

Your phone

Location access is closed in the phone's own settings. On an iPhone, the order goes like this:

  1. Leave Instagram and open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
  3. Scroll down and tap Instagram.
  4. Choose Never or While Using the App.

Instagram's location setting is off by default, the help page notes, and you decide when you share a photo. On Android, the help center points you to your device settings and the location permission for the app.

A privacy rule worth keeping: tag the city rather than your home, school or office. Share stories from a spot after you have left it.

Location tags for business: how a venue shows up in search

For a café, salon or shop, the location page works like a free shop window. Public photos and videos from guests who tagged the venue land there. Someone looks for dinner in their city and sees real shots instead of ads.

You cannot create a new location inside Instagram, the help center notes. The same page tells business profile owners to add an address so people know where the business is. Check that your venue already appears in search under the right name: guests will pick that entry.

Why tag your own posts

  • The location page. Your public uploads sit next to guest photos, and anyone who opens the venue from search sees them.
  • The map. Tagged reels and stories stay visible to your followers on the map for 24 hours.
  • Guest tags. Ask guests to tag the venue rather than the city, so their shots collect on one page.

Pages of nearby venues show what people shoot there. Our guide to finding competitors on Instagram shows how to turn those neighbors into a list. The piece on which hashtags to use helps with the caption.

Who posts nearby: what the location radar shows

A location page is fine for browsing a few photos, but a business needs more. The feed does not show who shoots at your venue most, which uploads perform or when the latest one appeared. By hand, that means opening each one and copying numbers into a spreadsheet.

The location report does that work for you. Name a venue or an address: the report collects posts tagged with that place and shows who shoots there and what they shoot. You do not sign in to your account. The report includes only what authors tagged themselves and left public. It does not determine anyone's location.

  • Posts carrying this location tag.
  • Authors: who shoots there most often.
  • What performs better, by views and reactions.
  • How recently posts appeared.

Sample: the name, handles and numbers are made up.

Location search answers any query and latches onto even a fragment of a word. So the venue it found appears on the card before payment, with its name and address. Wrong venue: add a city or street and try again, which costs nothing.

Content tagged at your venue or the one next door: who shoots there, what performs and how fresh it is. No login to your account.

Common questions

Do followers see where I am when I add a tag?

No. A tag shows the venue you picked yourself. Only people you chose on the map see your location, and that sharing is off by default.

Why is the suggestions list empty when I add a tag?

The app has no location access. Instagram Help says to leave the app and adjust location settings for Instagram on your device.

Does my tagged content show up in search when my profile is private?

No. Instagram Help says content from a private account appears on location pages for no one. Your followers still see a tagged story on the map.

Can I create a new location for my business?

Not inside Instagram. You can only tag existing locations, and a business profile owner can add an address to the profile.
