Instagram not working: what to check

Step one: is it just you or everyone

Half the wasted time happens right here. People start reinstalling the app while the whole platform is down.

The fastest check is asking someone you know, or looking at whether others are complaining. Major outages get discussed within minutes.

Step two: access and connection routing

In some countries access to the platform is restricted, so many people rely on VPNs. That is where the most common complaint comes from: everything works except Instagram.

What matters is understanding the mechanism. The app needs several connections rather than one: the feed, the media files and uploads all travel separately. With partial routing the interface opens while photos and videos never arrive.

Typical signs of partial access

• The feed loads but photos stay grey. Text arrived, media did not.
• Profiles open, stories will not play. Video takes a different route.
• Everything works but posting fails. Uploads need a stable connection.
• It runs for a couple of minutes then drops. The connection is unstable.

The general rule: when part of the content arrives and part does not, the problem is almost always the channel rather than the app. Reinstalling will not help.

Step three: your device

Once an outage is ruled out and access is fine, the phone is what remains. Work from simple to complex rather than the other way round.

1. Close and reopen the app. Solves more than it seems it should.
2. Restart the phone. The second most effective step and the most underrated.
3. Check for updates. An old build eventually stops working: the platform changes protocols and drops support for ancient versions.
4. Clear the app cache. On Android through app settings; on iPhone only by reinstalling.
5. Check free storage. With a full device the app crashes without explanation.
6. Reinstall. The last step, not the first: make sure you remember your password beforehand.

Specific cases

Only broken on iPhone

Usually the app version or background refresh restrictions. Check whether the app is allowed to use cellular data and refresh in the background: both live in the system settings.

Login fails with the correct password

Typically a temporary restriction for suspicious activity: a login from an unfamiliar address, a run of attempts, or a third-party app acting as you. A pause of a few hours plus identity confirmation from the email usually clears it.

The feed shows old posts

That is cache rather than a fault: the app shows what it stored until fresh data arrives. Pull the feed down to refresh, and if nothing changes, go back to the access step.

What works without the app

Some tasks need no app at all. A public profile is served to anyone, and its lists can be viewed from an ordinary browser even while the app refuses to start.
