When to post reels: times for every day of September 2026

Below is the schedule for the whole month, drawn from the two largest analyses available: 9.6 million posts and 975 thousand reels. The table comes first, then where the numbers come from and how to test them on your own audience.

In short

September’s strong days are Wednesday and Thursday; the weak ones are Friday and Saturday. Main slots: Tuesday and Monday around 7 p.m., Wednesday at midday, Thursday at 9 a.m., weekends after 9 p.m. The schedule repeats weekly, so a whole month can be scheduled in one evening. Other people’s numbers work as a two-week start; after that your followers’ activity chart decides.

The September 2026 schedule

Times follow Buffer as the larger sample. The time zone is your local one, which matters more than it sounds.

7, 14, 21, 28Monday7 p.m.6 p.m. or 8 p.m.

The schedule repeats weekly, which helps with planning. All four Mondays share one slot, so clips for them can be prepared in a batch and scheduled a month ahead in one sitting.

Buffer’s strong days are Wednesday and Thursday. The weak ones are Friday and Saturday, where reach sits noticeably lower at any hour.

The first of September falls on a Tuesday. In many places the morning belongs to back-to-school content, so the evening slot behaves more predictably than usual.

What the two largest studies show

And why they cannot be trusted blindly: the conclusions diverge sharply.

Buffer: 9.6 million posts

The Buffer team analysed 9.6 million posts from over 200,000 accounts across 2024 and 2025.

Their strongest days are Wednesday and Thursday; the weakest are Friday and Saturday. For clips the best stretch is the evening, roughly 6 to 11 p.m.

Later: 975 thousand reels

The Later analysis covers clips only — 975,000 of them worldwide.

Their conclusion is the opposite: the best day is Monday and the best hour is midnight, with strong returns from midnight to 6 a.m. They name Wednesday at 2 a.m. as the worst.

How to read that gap

One counted every format together, the other only clips. Different samples, different audiences, different years. There is almost no overlap, and that is the honest answer about a “best time”: no universal one exists.

The practical conclusion is simple. Other people’s data works as a starting point for a fortnight; after that your own statistics decide.

Testing the alternative version

Monday at midnight, per Later

Take the Mondays — 7, 14, 21 and 28 September — and publish around midnight. Four attempts are enough to see whether that scenario works for your audience.

Compare against your own earlier clips rather than anyone else’s numbers. Watch the completion share rather than views: that is what decides how far you travel.

Finding your own time instead of an average

Where follower activity lives

Profile reports hold an audience section with an activity chart by hour and day. It is built from your followers rather than the whole world, which makes it more accurate than any article.

It does not unlock immediately: the platform wants roughly a hundred followers. What else the reports show, and how reach differs from impressions, is covered in Instagram insights.

Testing a hypothesis in two weeks

  1. Pick two slots: the peak from the chart, and two hours earlier.
  2. Publish alternately, switching every other day.
  3. Record completion share and reach among non-followers.
  4. After two weeks compare the averages — the difference is usually obvious.

One clip proves nothing. The spread between two random posts is often larger than the difference between a good and a bad hour.

Time zones: the common mistake

Every foreign study publishes times in its own zone, usually an American one. Transferring those figures mechanically makes no sense.

The chart in your profile reports shows hours in your zone and for your audience, which is exactly why it beats any published table. If followers are spread across a wide country, no single peak exists at all.

  • An audience in one city. The peak is sharp and a slot can be chosen.
  • An audience across a country. Two or three peaks; aim at the largest.
  • An audience abroad. Count in their zone, not yours.

Why timing cannot save a dead audience

Timing has a ceiling that rarely gets mentioned. The activity chart is built from your followers — from everyone on the list.

If a sizeable part of that list is lifeless, the chart shows the hours when accounts that never open the app are “active”. You end up tuning a schedule around people who do not exist.

One chart, two different meanings
Activity peak at 9 p.m.per the profile report
Real followers with feedsthe chart means something
Empty profiles with no poststhe chart means nothing
A 9 p.m. peak may mean a living audience — or bought followers delivered on a schedule.

The chart itself cannot reveal this: the platform does not flag empty accounts. It takes a breakdown of the follower list by signals — how many profiles carry no posts, no avatar, and thousands of follows beside an empty feed.

Until that share is measured, choosing a time stays guesswork: you are optimising for an audience whose composition you do not know.

Common questions

What time should I post reels in September 2026?

Per Buffer: around 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Monday, midday on Wednesday, 9 a.m. on Thursday, and after 9 p.m. on Friday and the weekend. The strongest days are Wednesday and Thursday.

Is Monday really the best day for reels?

Later says so, based on 975,000 clips, naming midnight as the best hour. Buffer, on 9.6 million posts, names Wednesday and Thursday. The two contradict each other, so test on your own audience.

How many posts does it take to find my time?

At least eight to ten across two weeks, alternating two slots. A single clip proves nothing: random spread exceeds the difference between hours.

How do I convert times from foreign studies?

You do not — mechanical conversion fails. Use the activity chart in your profile reports: it is already in your zone and built from your followers.

Why did the chosen time change nothing?

Often the audience composition. The chart counts every follower, including inactive and empty profiles, so the peak may point at viewers who do not exist.
