Anonymous story viewing on Instagram comes down to one detail. Every story keeps a viewer list. The author swipes up on their own screen and gets the names of everyone who opened it.
The list lives a day, same as the story. Then it disappears. Getting on it is easy: the story only has to reach your screen for a second. Closing the app comes too late, the record is already sent.
The order of names means nothing
People read the list as a timeline: higher means earlier. That is wrong. Instagram mixes its own logic into the sorting, and view times cannot be recovered from it.

Methods two through five share one flaw: they do not deliver anonymous story viewing. Somebody still ends up in the viewer list. The only question is who.
Why airplane mode lets you down
The trick sounds sensible: no network, nothing to send. In practice the app queues the view receipt and delivers it later, as soon as the connection is back.
The second trap: half-loaded stories
Stories are not all cached, and not fully. You open the third one, it has not finished loading, the app reaches for the network, and the receipt goes out instantly.
In practice this works about half the time. For anything that matters, half is not enough.

- Stories from a private profile. Only approved followers see them. A promise to show a private account is a lie.
- Who viewed your profile. Instagram keeps no such list: only the viewers of a specific story.

- Messages and likes. Unrelated to stories, but often promised in the same bundle.

Common questions about anonymous viewing
Will the person know I watched their story through a website?
No. The story opens from somewhere other than your account, so you will not be in the viewer list. Nothing happens on the profile owner’s side.
Can I view a private profile’s stories incognito?
No. A private profile shows stories only to approved followers. That is Instagram’s restriction, and no service gets around it.
Do I need a password for anonymous viewing?
No. For a public profile no login is required, yours or theirs. A service asking for a password to show stories wants it for something else.
How long do Instagram stories last?
One day. After that only what the author moved to Highlights remains, and it stays until they delete it.
