Birthday reel: how to find a trend that is still growing and shoot your video in time

A birthday reel is easiest to build on a format other creators are repeating right now: a sound or a template. You find it through search and on the audio page, then check that fresh reels still use that sound. Then your own shots go into the template or get cut to the beat.

In short

A birthday reel works best on a live format: a sound or template that fresh reels are using right now. The audio page shows whether the wave is alive, and a snapshot shows the speed. Use your own footage, post guests and children only with consent, and check the track in advance.

What a birthday reel is made of: formats that are easy to repeat

A format here means a device many creators repeat: a shared sound, template or plot. General ideas are in our list of 30 formats you can shoot in one evening.

FormatWhat to shootHow many shotsGood for
Photos by year on one soundOne photo of the birthday person for each year8 to 15 photosYourself, a child, parents
A montage of friends' wishesEach friend says one line to the camera5 to 8 clipsA friend, a coworker
Getting readyBalloons, table, outfit, the last minutes before guests arrive6 to 10 clipsYourself and family
Cake and candles in close-upBringing out the cake, candles, blowing them out, the first slice3 to 5 clipsAnyone, a baker
A tribute from shared shotsPhotos and clips from years of friendship10 to 20 shotsA partner, a best friend, a sibling
A party order through the maker's eyesThe order from sketch to handover5 to 8 clipsBakers, hosts, decorators

The numbers in the table are made up. One platform condition applies: per Instagram Help, templates exist only for reels with music and at least 3 clips. Pick the format that fits the footage already on your phone. Say a mom has one photo of her son for each of his 10 years: photos by year suit her. A baker is better off with the order through the maker's eyes.

How to find a birthday trend and check that it is still alive

A party reel set to a sound that peaked a month ago gets fewer views than usual. A birthday comes once a year, so posting a week late or reshooting is not an option. On a business account, the song you planned may be missing. A live wave shows up early: new reels keep coming on the sound or template, and the hashtag's top posts are recent.

What is trending for birthdays right now: where to see it

Instagram does not publish a general list of current waves. The current party wave shows up as fresh reels using one sound or template. The snapshot below shows which one grows faster. Per Instagram Help, the label for trending sounds works only in the US and in the mobile app.

Search by words and hashtag

Type “birthday”, “happy birthday” and “bday” into search in the app: people caption their posts differently. Check a hashtag such as happybirthday as well. From the results, pick reels where the same sound sits under the creator's name. One sound repeated across different people is the sign of a wave.

The audio page: look at fresh uploads, not the total count

Per the same Help page, the audio name sits under the creator's name. Tap it and the audio page opens with the reels that use this track. The “Use audio” button there adds the track to a reel, story or post.

Take two made-up sounds. The first has 40,000 uploads, but nothing new for a month: the wave is over. The second has 900, but new creators pick it up every day in the feed: that sound is alive. Other places to look are covered in our guide to Instagram trends.

A template from a reel you liked

You can take a template straight from someone else's reel. Per Instagram Help, tap “Template by...” on the reel itself, then “Use template”. Not every reel can serve as a template. Check its freshness on the page of its audio.

How to make a reel for a birthday, step by step

With a template and your own photos and videos

A template takes the music and timing of the original, and you swap the original clips for your own photos or videos. That is how Instagram Help puts it, and the path is:

  1. Tap “Create” at the top of the screen or swipe right anywhere in the feed.
  2. Choose “Reels” at the bottom, then “Templates”.
  3. Swipe through the templates and pick one.
  4. Tap “Add media” and select photos or videos in the order you want.
  5. Tap “Next”. To change a clip, tap it and choose “Replace media”.
  6. Tap “Next” again to preview and share the reel.

Timing means where the cuts fall and how long each clip lasts. A template with 12 clips takes 12 photos by year, from the first to this one.

With a sound

Without a template, you build the rhythm by hand. Take a 15-second reel that changes the shot on every strong beat: it needs 8 to 12 shots. Choose a part of the track with a clear chorus. Keep shot captions short: a year, a name, one word. Cuts and transitions are covered in how to edit reels on your phone.

Music: a track from the library or the audio page

Add the track from the music library while building the reel, or with the “Use audio” button on the audio page. On a business account the song you want may not be there, as music for Instagram reels explains. Check the track on your account before you shoot.

A creative birthday tribute for a friend

A tribute to someone close runs on shared footage. Put it in order by year and end with a group shot from this party. The reel then closes on the day it was made for.

Invite your friend as a collaborator. Per Instagram Help, before posting tap “Tag people”, then “Invite collaborators” and pick the account. Once they accept, the reel is shared with their followers and shows on their profile. A regular tag does not share content with the tagged person's followers.

Why a party reel got fewer views than you expected

  • The wave is over: the sound peaked a month ago, and the reel came out a week later.
  • It contains someone else's video with a watermark or is a full re-upload. According to Instagram's post for creators from April 30, 2026, accounts that mostly post unoriginal content are left out of recommendations.
  • The track is unavailable on a business account, so a different one went in at the last minute.
  • The account is private. Per Instagram Help, only followers see a reel from a private account.
  • Text hides under the app's buttons, or the frame is cropped: see reels video format and cover.
  • The joke works only for guests. An outside viewer needs a clear reason: whose birthday it is and how old they are turning.

Pick the posting hour from your own stats, as in when to post reels and the best time to post on Instagram.

Which birthday reels are growing right now: measuring the topic

Scrolling on your own, you see the reels themselves, but not how fast they gain views. Take two made-up reels: 50,000 views over six months and 8,000 in two days. The second grows faster, and the counter hides it.

The Reels trends by topic report measures the birthday topic in one snapshot, with no access to your account. It has five metrics:

  • View velocity, split by the age of the reel.
  • How much of the topic's results is fresh.
  • Flow on the hashtag: how many posts come out per hour.
  • Age of the hashtag's top posts: whether the hashtag is alive or a museum.
  • Hashtags that are rising on fresh posts.

Velocity is counted over a reel's whole life, so fresh reels look faster by design. A fair comparison stays within one age group. This is one snapshot, not tracking: it cannot see growth between two points. The report has no list of reels with links, no name for “that one” trend and no forecast for your reel. A separate report, Trending Reels sounds, collects sounds with the platform's label.

In this made-up example, the hashtag's top posts are young, and 7 posts an hour come in under it: the wave is moving now. Rising hashtags hint at a plot: a custom cake and a baby's first year.

A snapshot of the birthday topic shows how fast fresh reels grow and which hashtags rise, before you start filming.

Measure the topic

Where the line is: faces, children and other people's reels

At a party, guests and children end up in the frame, and someone else's music in the audio.

  • Post photos of guests and the birthday person only with their consent: in Russia, Article 152.1 of the Civil Code requires it, with a few exceptions.
  • Other people's children appear only with their parents' permission. Under Meta's Community Standards, images of a child under 13 are removed when the child, a parent or a legal guardian reports them. A teen aged 13 to 18 files that report themselves.
  • An adult outside the US reports content showing them personally, where local law may give a right to removal.
  • Re-uploading someone else's trending reel or cutting their footage into yours is off the table. Repeat the format instead: the sound, a template or a remix. Per Instagram's post for creators, you are responsible for permissions before using someone else's work.
  • The track stays with its copyright holder: add it from the app's library, not as a downloaded file.
  • A collaborator is invited only with their consent, and the reel reaches their profile only after they accept.

A reel ordered or paid for by a bakery or a balloon studio is an ad. Online ad labeling under Article 18.1 of Russia's Advertising Law 38-FZ has applied since September 1, 2022, the date set by Federal Law 347-FZ. Since September 1, 2025, Part 10.7 of Article 5 of the same law has banned ads on resources with restricted access. Law 72-FZ added that part, and Garant's legal analysis counts Instagram among such resources. Details are in how much Instagram influencer ads cost.

Common questions

How do I shoot a trending cake reel for a birthday?

Take the cake and candles close-up format: bringing the cake out, candles, blowing them out, the first slice. Three to five clips will do. Put them into a template or cut them to a sound. For a template, pick one with the same number of clips, since your shots fill its slots in order. Check the wave on the audio page by its latest uploads. There are no named cake sounds here: the platform does not publish a general list of current waves.

Where can I find trending audio for a birthday post?

The platform labels these sounds only in the US and in the mobile app. Public accounts there get a list of up to 50 tracks under Your dashboard or Professional dashboard, then Trending audio. In the Reels feed, a labeled sound has an arrow next to its name. Everywhere else, use the audio page and check whether fresh reels are still coming out on the song. A separate report of ours collects sounds with the platform's label. On a business account the song you want may be missing, as our music for reels article explains.

Can I make a party reel from photos only?

Yes. Per Instagram Help, a template replaces the original clips with your photos or videos, so photos are enough. The photos by year format is made entirely of pictures. For rhythm, use 8 to 15 photos on one sound. A step-by-step guide with music is in our article on making a reel from photos.

When should I post a reel for someone's birthday: on the day or in advance?

A tribute to someone close goes up on the birthday itself: that is the date when viewers understand the reason. A maker's reel about a party order is not tied to one date: post it while its sound is still growing. Check the sound the day before posting: the wave may have faded while you were editing. Pick the hour from your account's stats.
