Where new followers come from in 2026
New people find you through reels (short vertical videos), Explore, search and posts by other accounts. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, wrote in May 2023 that most of what people see in that tab comes from accounts they do not follow.
The platform picks an audience for each clip through predictions. Its ranking explainer names four key ones: whether a viewer will reshare the clip, watch it to the end, like it, or open the audio page. A system card in Meta's Transparency Center, updated 11 November 2025, adds one more: whether the viewer will follow the author.
That gives one rule for anyone working out how to get followers. A follow happens when a stranger finishes a clip and opens your profile.
A profile that turns a viewer into a follower
Growth advice tends to start with video. People get lost on the profile page, though: a viewer sees a handle and one caption line, then decides to follow only after tapping through.
Name and bio
A 2021 search explainer from Instagram says a query is matched against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places. The platform advises putting what people search for into your handle and profile name. It also suggests adding relevant keywords and your location to the bio.
Take a nail technician in Austin. The name “Anna” will not surface in a search for the service, while “Anna, nails Austin” matches a local query. The bio then answers three things: how you help, whom you help, and what to do next.
Pinned posts and the first screen
The first screen of a profile holds the bio, the highlight covers and the top row of the grid. The Help Center lets you pin up to three posts to the top. Give those slots to posts that make following feel like the natural next step.
- The clip that explains most clearly what the account is about.
- The clip that brought the most follows in recent months.
- An answer to a frequent request: prices, booking, a course outline.
Reels as the main route to people who do not follow you
The creator FAQ is direct: the best way to grow followers is to consistently post engaging reels, since they reach new audiences best. Creators with the fastest follower growth publish 10 or more reels a month on average, the same page says. For unconnected audiences, the platform recommends videos of 3 minutes or less. Regularity beats one lucky hit.
The first seconds
Viewers decide whether to keep watching at the very start. Instagram advises making the first 3 seconds engaging so people do not move on. The ranking system predicts whether someone will watch less than three seconds. It also predicts whether they will watch more of a clip than 95% of viewers of clips the same length.
- The outcome in the first frame: finished nails, an assembled wardrobe, a number on screen.
- The point of the video as on-screen text for people watching without sound.
Our breakdown of reels retention shows how to compare average watch time across clips of equal length.
An original reel versus a repost with someone else's watermark
Reposted clips get little push. In 2023 Instagram listed what it makes less visible, including watermarked reels and videos already posted on the platform.
On 30 April 2026 the rule expanded to photos and carousels. Accounts that mainly post content they did not create are no longer shown where the platform recommends content. Adding a border, watermark, subtitles or a caption credit does not make a repost original. The change does not affect what followers see from accounts they follow.
Other people's audiences: collaborations, mentions, creator ads
Someone else's audience gives you a way in through a person those viewers already trust.
Collaboration. A collab post appears on two profiles at once. Instagram describes the feature as a single post shared with the followers of both accounts. It works best with a creator in a neighbouring niche and of similar size: a makeup artist and a photographer, a trainer and a cook.
Mentions. A tag in another account's story or post takes viewers to your profile in one tap. Say a coffee shop tags its bean roaster, and the roaster tags the shop back.
Creator ads. A paid placement brings a fast stream of visitors, but the creator's audience sets its quality. Check the creator before paying, using the signs of a real creator.
Mass following and follow-for-follow chats produce a number with no viewers behind it. What follow-for-follow chats lead to is covered separately.
Free and bought followers: what happens to the account
Followers from tasks, bought packages and follow swaps end the same way: the counter grows and the audience does not. The signs of such an audience are covered in how bought followers look from the outside.
Dead followers cut reach
Feed posts go to the people who follow you. Instagram says ranking looks at how many people like, comment on, share and save a post, and how quickly. The ranking explainer also lists information about the author, such as follower count and engagement level. A dead follower sends none of these signals.
Take an account with 5,000 followers, 2,000 of them bought. Bots never open the app and never like anything. Reactions come only from the 3,000 real people. Engagement, the share of reactions relative to follower count, drops by 40% with the same reactions.
The platform removes fake accounts
Buying follows is banned outright. Meta's spam policy prohibits selling, buying or exchanging likes, views and follows. On 19 November 2018 Instagram announced it would remove inauthentic likes, follows and comments generated by third-party apps. Accounts that used such apps received an in-app message asking them to change their password.
The Help Center says the platform routinely removes disabled accounts, so follower totals can change within a short time. Meta discloses the scale in its annual report for 2025. It estimated that in the fourth quarter of 2025, less than 5% of daily active people across its apps consisted solely of violating accounts, including bots and spam.
How to check that you gained real followers
A rising counter does not mean people arrived. Followers from a giveaway look like everyone else on the list, and the difference shows only in the accounts themselves.
The Sled audience quality report reads public profile data without signing into your account. It gives a count and a share for each signal: no profile photo, a handle made of digits, zero posts, clusters of similar registrations. The report shows no bot percentage on purpose. A real person can skip a profile photo too, so every signal comes with a list to review by hand.
Check your follower list after an ad or a giveaway and see how many accounts fall under each signal.
Check audience qualityHow to tell your growth is on track
There is no single growth norm: niches, formats and countries differ too much. Compare the account with itself, month over month.
The numbers live in built-in insights. The Help Center defines views, average watch time and follows for each reel, meaning how many accounts started following you after it. Our guide to Instagram insights shows where to find these screens.
- Follows per thousand views for each clip: which ones bring people.
- Average watch time across clips of the same length.
Take two clips with 20,000 views each. The first brought 120 follows, the second 15. Study the first and repeat its format, while the second delivered reach with no interest in the author.
A warning sign: the counter jumped, while views and follows from your clips stayed flat. That growth did not come from reels, and the follower list deserves a check.
Common questions
How do I get followers from zero with no budget?
Start with the profile: a name with your niche, a three-line bio, three pinned posts. Then publish your own reels on a schedule. The creator FAQ says the fastest-growing creators post 10 or more a month. The first followers arrive from recommendations and search.
Can I buy real followers?
No. Meta's rules prohibit selling and buying follows, so any such package breaks them. A person who followed for money or a task does not watch your videos. Calling a package real followers changes nothing.
Why did reach drop after buying followers?
Bought accounts do not like posts or watch videos. The share of reactions per follower falls, and posts look weaker to ranking. Later the platform removes some of those accounts, and the counter drops.
What is the fastest way to grow on Instagram?
Collab posts and ads with vetted creators work fastest, since they open a ready audience. Reels grow the base more slowly but bring people interested in you specifically. Check any sudden jump without more views for quality.
