How to recover an Instagram account

Identify your situation

There is a fifth case that gets confused with the other four. The login fails, the password is right, no emails arrive — and the fault lies with the app or the network rather than the account. Forgotten password, emails still arrive

Password recovery is the simplest case, and it takes a couple of minutes.

1. On the login screen tap Forgot password.
2. Enter your username, linked email or phone number.
3. Open the email and follow the link.
4. Set a new password.

If no email arrives, check the spam folder and make sure you are using the right address. A common mistake is trying an address that was never linked to this account.

No access to any contact

Recovering access here is harder: the platform has to be convinced the profile is yours while the usual confirmations are unavailable.

Requesting support

On the login screen choose the trouble-logging-in option and state that you no longer have the old contacts. The system will ask for a new email to reply to.

Two routes follow. If the account carries photos of you, a video selfie is requested: a short clip where you turn your head to each side. It is compared against the profile images.

If there are no photos with a face, expect questions about the old email, phone and the device you registered from. The more precise your answers, the better the odds.

What improves the odds

• Apply from your usual device. The phone you normally logged in from.
• From your usual location. A change of country during the request looks suspicious.
• Do not file ten requests in a row. It slows things down: processing restarts.
• Answer consistently. Contradictions across requests almost guarantee a refusal.

If you were hacked

The signs are recognisable: the email and password changed, messages go out in your name, unfamiliar posts appear. Move fast, before the intruder unlinks the last remaining contact.

Check your email first. The platform sends a message whenever a linked address changes, and it contains a link to revert that change. If the email is there and the window has not closed, access returns with one tap.

If there is no such email

The hacked account form remains. The procedure matches lost access: identity confirmation, sometimes a video selfie, and waiting for a reply.

Once you are back, change the password, switch on two-factor confirmation and revoke access for every third-party app. Most hacks arrive from there: someone once handed access to a service promising insights or followers. Those apps are covered in Instagram spy apps.

You deleted it yourself

After deletion the data is held for roughly thirty days. During that window simply logging in with the old details restores the account in full.

Once the window closes nothing helps: not support, not appeals, not evidence. Posts, follows and followers are erased, and the username is released and may already be taken.

What never comes back

Even a successful recovery loses some data, and almost nobody writes about it.

• Following and follower lists once the account is erased. They live neither in the archive nor in any post-deletion download.
• Stories older than a day without an archive. If archive saving was off, they do not exist.
• Messages from a deleted correspondent. They vanish on their side.
• A released username. Anyone can take it.

Hence a simple rule: while access still works, spend a minute capturing the lists. There will be nowhere to recover them from later, and the platform keeps no other copy.
