How to search hashtags on Instagram, step by step
Two paths lead to a tag feed: the search bar and a link in a caption. The first works when you know what to type. The second works when a tagged photo is already on screen. Both work in the app and in a browser on a computer.
Searching in the app on your phone
- Open search in the app and tap the search bar.
- Type the word. The hash sign is optional.
- Open the full results and switch to the tags tab.
- Pick a suggestion. Its page opens with photos and videos.
Suggestions match your words, not the symbol. Meta's Transparency Center card on Instagram search, updated June 23, 2026, lists four signals for such suggestions, including these two. One is how often people in your country clicked a suggestion for the same search, compared with how often it was shown. Another is how closely your words match the tag itself. The same card says results can be filtered by category: accounts, audio, tags and places.
From a post: tap tags in the caption or a comment
The second path is shorter. Instagram's Help Center says tags go in the caption or in a comment. Each one under a photo or video works as a link. Tap it to open a page of photos and videos carrying the same tag.
In a browser on a computer and without logging in
The web version of Instagram works the same way. The Help Center gives steps for a computer too: a click on the link in a caption opens the same page.
Logged out, the address of a tag page leads elsewhere. As of September 23, 2026, it opened a set of popular reels on the topic, with view counts and a sign-up button. The Help Center table on public and private accounts adds two more things. Profile name, photo and bio are visible to anyone, on or off Instagram. Links to photos and videos from public profiles appear in search engine results. So a public photo or video can sometimes be found through a regular search engine by caption words.
What a hashtag page shows
The page collects photos and videos with the same tag in the caption or a comment. The Help Center is direct: photos and videos from private profiles do not appear publicly on these pages.
The feed is not sorted strictly by time. The Help Center article on these search results names three ordering factors, including engagement from other people. All three are covered in our guide to checking for a shadowban. So a post's place in the feed shifts: how recent it is and how people react to it move it up or down.
You can no longer follow a hashtag. Instagram turned the option off in late 2024. The next section shows other ways back to the same feed.
How to find the right post when there are thousands
A broad feed gets new photos and videos nonstop and grows fast. Four moves help you find the right one faster: a narrow tag, words from the caption, a place and your search history.
A narrow tag and its spelling variants
Narrow tags name the subject more precisely than broad ones and hold less noise. Say you want a pottery studio in Austin. Instead of a broad one like «#pottery», try a narrow one like «#austinpottery». Authors spell the same words in different ways, so check several versions:
- joined together: «#handmadepottery»
- with underscores: «#handmade_pottery»
- in another language: «#keramika»
- with a year: «#pottery2026»
Each spelling has its own page with its own feed. All examples here are made up.
Finding a tagged post by words from the caption
You may not remember the exact tag but remember what the video was about. Then search by words. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, wrote on the company blog on August 25, 2021 that a query is matched against usernames, bios, captions, tags and places. He called the text you type into the search bar by far the most important signal. The same article advises creators to put keywords and hashtags in the caption, not in the comments.
Type two or three words from the caption, not one general word. Say you saw a reel about a bento cake a week ago. Type «bento cake Denver». Check reels in the results first, then open the suggestions one by one. Look for the video on each of those pages.
A place instead of a tag
A reel from an event or a specific venue is easier to find by place. Places sit in the results as a separate category, as Meta's search card shows. A location works like a second tag: the author adds a place and the reel or photo lands on that place's page. Place pages are covered in our guide to Instagram location tags. Private profiles stay hidden there too, per the Help Center.
Coming back to a tag without following it
There are two ways back to a tag. The first is search history. You can reopen it from your recent searches without typing it again. Meta's card says you can remove recent searches one by one or clear them all at once. The second: follow the authors who use the tag regularly. Their new reels and photos will reach your feed without a search.
Why a hashtag won't show up or the post you need is missing
There are four causes, each with its own sign: nothing in suggestions, an empty feed, a hidden reel or text that did not become a link.
The tag was removed from search
You typed it correctly, but it is not in the suggestions. The Help Center explains that a tag may stop being searchable when its text or its content consistently breaks the Terms of Use or Community Standards. Instagram reviews such tags from time to time. When the content under one changes, it may become searchable again. Until then, search by caption words or by place.
Posts were removed from the feed
Another case: the tag is searchable, but the reel you need is not on its page. According to the Help Center, Instagram may remove posts from these search results when people use it for content that goes against Community Standards. An empty or thin feed for a popular topic can mean such a cleanup rather than an app bug.
The post is from a private account
You saw a reel on a friend's phone, but it is not on the page. Check the author's profile. The Help Center compares public and private accounts: nobody sees photos and videos of a private account in search results, Explore, or on tag and place pages. Anyone who does not follow the account has one option: a follow request that the author approves or ignores.
Why a hashtag doesn't work
If the text did not turn into a link, a character broke it. The Help Center sets three rules: numbers are allowed, spaces and symbols like $ or % break it, and one photo or video takes no more than five tags. A comment with more than five tags won't go through. Spelling rules are covered in our explainer on what a tag is. If your own reel dropped out of the results, start with a shadowban check.
Which tags the top posts in your niche actually use
Manual search answers one query at a time. You open a feed, scroll, note the tags under strong reels and repeat with the next word. By the tenth page the list in your head gets mixed up. The Sled report does this work from public profiles: it reads the top of a tag feed and merges the repeats into one list.
The input is one tag or topic. The report has four parts:
- reels and photos from the top of the feed with their reach and reactions
- the tags that repeat most often on strong posts, and how often each one appears
- how many tags those authors actually use
- the format of that content and the length of the videos
Name a tag or a topic and see which tags the strongest content under it uses.
See the tags of strong postsShared tags are an observation, not the cause of reach. Instagram ranks content by how viewers behave. The same set on a weak video will change nothing. The list is there so you stop guessing what is common in your niche. How to build a set for your own reel is covered in our guide to choosing tags in 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Can you follow a hashtag in 2026?
No. Instagram turned this option off in late 2024. To keep up with a topic, use your recent searches or follow the authors who cover it.
Will the author know you found their post through a tag?
Not from the visit itself. Instagram does not show anyone who visited a profile. An author learns a visitor's name only through an action: a story view, a like, a reply or a follow. More in our guide to who viewed your Instagram profile.
Why doesn't my post show up when I search hashtags?
Check four things. Your profile must be public, since posts from private accounts do not reach tag pages. Your tags must have no spaces or symbols like $ or %. The photo or video must carry no more than five tags. Fresher reels and photos with more reactions may also have pushed yours down.
Can you clear your search history?
Yes. Meta's search card says you can remove one recent search or clear them all at once. The query disappears from your recent list, and you can find it again through the search bar.
