Instagram carousels: how to make one, which size to choose and when it beats a reel

An Instagram carousel is one post with several photos and videos that people swipe through. You start with the Create button and select several files at once. Instagram allows up to 20 per post, according to its Help Center. The aspect ratio decides what gets cropped in the feed, since one frame applies to the whole set.

In short

An Instagram carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos with one frame for the whole set. Prepare files in one aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4, at least 1080 pixels wide. Instagram Help covers music for the phone app only, and only for sets without video. After posting, you can remove and reorder slides but not add new ones.

What a carousel is and how it differs from a regular post and a reel

Instagram Help on sharing multiple photos states the limit plainly: up to 20 photos and videos in one post. How many to use depends on the idea: a weekly menu fits six slides, a how-to fits eight. Photos and videos can be mixed.

In the feed, people see the first frame with a row of dots below it and swipe for the rest. On your profile grid, the same frame shows up with a gallery icon in the top right corner.

On the surface, a regular post differs only in the number of files and the row of dots. A reel works another way: it plays on its own, full screen and with sound, while slides move only when the viewer swipes. A series made for reading fits slides, and a story told with sound fits a reel.

Can you post a carousel as a reel?

No. A set of several photos stays a regular feed post. Videos inside it, according to Instagram Help, do not count as reels and do not appear in the Reels tab. To turn photos into a reel, you build a video from them. Our guide on how to make a reel from photos covers the steps and when a reel beats a set of slides.

How to make an Instagram carousel step by step

Prepare the slides in any editor, then publish them in the Instagram app itself. A single-photo post follows the same path without the multi-select step.

On your phone

  1. Tap Create at the top of the screen or swipe right in your feed.
  2. Tap Post, then Select multiple.
  3. Pick up to 20 photos and videos, then tap each one to adjust its frame.
  4. Tap Next and choose a filter for the whole set, or tap one photo to edit it alone.
  5. Tap and hold a slide to drag it to a new spot, or drag it to the delete icon to drop it.
  6. Tap Next, then pick Single caption or Multiple captions.
  7. Add a location and use Tag People on the slides you need.
  8. Tap Share.

On a computer

The browser path is almost the same. According to Instagram Help, Create sits on the left. Then click Post, Select from computer and the multi-select icon, with the same limit. You drag images to crop and reorder them and remove one with the icon next to it. To schedule the post for a specific day, see our guide on scheduling on Instagram.

Music: where to add it and when the option is missing

Instagram Help on music with multiple photos states one condition directly: the set must hold photos only, with no video. Its steps cover only the mobile app, with none for computers. The path: photos, filters, Next, then Add music. Choose a song from For you, Browse or search, then pick the segment you want.

Carousel size and format: which aspect ratio to pick

Aspect ratio is the width of a frame compared to its height: 3:4 means three parts wide and four parts tall. Instagram Help on image resolution sets the limits: an aspect ratio from 1.91:1 to 3:4. A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its original resolution. Instagram enlarges narrower photos to 320 pixels, scales wider ones down to 1080 and crops other ratios.

Multi-photo posts add a second rule. According to Instagram Help, one orientation applies to the whole set: square, portrait or horizontal. You cannot mix frames inside one post.

FrameAspect ratioSize at 1080 pixels wideWhat happens to the other slidesPreview on the profile grid
Vertical3:41080 × 1440They take the same frame, and horizontal shots lose their sidesThe tall cell shows it almost in full
Square1:11080 × 1080They turn into squares, and vertical shots lose top and bottomThe side edges are cut off
Horizontal1.91:11080 × 566They take a wide frame, and vertical shots lose most of their heightOnly the middle of the frame shows

A 3:4 vertical frame is taller than a square and fills more of a phone screen. Use it for text and products. A 1.91:1 horizontal frame suits a single-frame panorama, while a long panorama gets cut into vertical slides, as shown below.

Why your photo gets cropped and how to avoid it

There are three causes. The photo falls outside the 1.91:1 to 3:4 range. Your slides have different ratios, while the frame is shared. Or a frame got nudged during the crop step and an edge slipped out.

  • Bring every file to the same aspect ratio before uploading.
  • Use a width of at least 1080 pixels. Instagram Help says this keeps the photo at the full 1080-pixel width.
  • Keep the key subject near the center, since the edges go first.
  • Before you tap Share, swipe through the whole set and check the edges.

Since January 2025 the profile grid cells are tall, as Instagram head Adam Mosseri wrote. The preview comes from the first slide, so keep the key subject of the cover in the center.

Panorama across several slides: how to split a wide image without shifts

This format is often called a «seamless carousel»: one wide picture cut into parts that flow into each other as you swipe. The canvas is several frames wide, in one aspect ratio, and gets cut into equal pieces.

Say you have a three-frame panorama at 3:4. The canvas comes out at 3240 × 1440 pixels, with cuts exactly at 1080 and 2160. Keep faces, text and products clear of the cuts, or the seam will slice them in half.

  • Upload the parts strictly left to right and do not drag them during the crop step.
  • Choose the portrait frame and check before sharing that no part has lost its edges.

How to edit a multi-photo post after publishing

Instagram Help lists what you can change after sharing: the order, removing photos or videos, the caption, the location and tags. Open the post, tap the three-dot menu on the right and select Edit.

How to add photos to a post that is already live

You cannot add new photos or videos after sharing, and Instagram Help says so directly. The workaround: save the caption and tags, build the full set and publish it again. Then delete the old version or move it to the archive. Our guide to the Instagram archive explains the difference.

A draft saves you from reposting: you check the set before it goes live. According to Instagram Help, Close in the editor offers Save draft, and the draft stays on that phone.

Can you delete or swap a single photo after posting?

  • Delete one photo. Yes: in Edit mode, remove the frame and tap Done.
  • Change the order. Yes, with a long press and drag.
  • Replace a photo. No: remove the weak frame or share the whole set again.
  • Bring back a removed photo. Edit mode has no option for this, so keep the originals in your gallery.

A deleted post as a whole can come back: Instagram Help on recovering deleted content says it stays in Recently deleted for 30 days. The path: profile, menu, Your activity, Recently deleted.

Which carousels people swipe to the end

The first slide works as a cover and a promise: according to Instagram Help, it is the only one visible in the feed and on your profile before a swipe. Put the main idea there, along with what the viewer gets by the end. A headline like “Seven mistakes in a rental lease” does the job.

Text slides are read on a phone: large font, short lines, a calm background. One slide carries one idea. The last one sums up and asks for one action: save, comment a word or open the profile.

Track your numbers in Insights, the built-in statistics for your account. Instagram Help on insights lists views, interactions and profile activity for each post. Interactions cover likes, comments, saves and shares. Our guide to Instagram Insights explains each number.

Picture a how-to of eight slides with 140 saves and a cake photo with 12. The cake has more likes, but saves show that people will come back to the how-to.

Carousels, reels or photos: what works for you

According to Instagram Help, Insights show each post's numbers and an overview for up to 90 days. Averaging reactions by format across a whole profile is manual work. The content review does that math.

The report collects recent posts of a public account with their public counters. Reels, photos and multi-slide sets are compared by reactions. The strongest and weakest posts stand out, along with the gap between them in numbers. The report also shows your rhythm: how often you publish and on which days.

Profile review: coffee.on.cornersample
Carousels: 9186 reactions on average
Reels: 7142 reactions on average
Photos: 664 reactions on average
Strongest post: weekly menu412 reactions, 6 times the weakest
Rhythm3 posts a week, most often on Tuesday
The name and numbers are made up: this is how the report rows look.

Reach and saves stay in the author's Insights and out of the report. The report does not show how far people swipe either, and the comparison uses what any visitor can see.

Where to draw the line: study other people's posts by the numbers, never copy them

A review of someone else's public profile uses public numbers only. You can study how a strong series is built, but the photos, text and design belong to their author. Instagram's Terms of Use prohibit violating someone else's intellectual property rights, including copyright.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum number of photos in an Instagram carousel?

Up to 20 photos and videos in one post, according to Instagram Help. You can mix both types.

Why did my photo get cropped in a multi-photo post?

Its ratio falls outside 1.91:1 to 3:4, or it differs from the frame of the whole set. One frame applies to every slide, so bring all files to one ratio before uploading.

How do I add music to a set of several photos?

Instagram Help gives steps for the mobile app only, and a set with video cannot get music. After the filters, tap Next, then Add music, and pick the segment of the song.

Can I mix photos and videos in one post?

Yes, up to 20 files. Two trade-offs apply: that set cannot get music, and the videos inside do not count as reels.
