Close Friends on Instagram: how to add someone, remove them and who will see your stories

Who sees these stories and where else the list works

A story shared with the list reaches only the people on it. Your other followers do not see it. Instagram Help on this feature adds two details. People on the list know they are on it. Nobody can request to be added.

The list is different from a private account. According to Instagram Help, an adult starts with a public profile that anyone can see. A private account shows content only to approved followers and changes access to everything at once. The list narrows the audience for one piece of content. The opposite tool is the Hide story and live from setting, which hides your stories from chosen people and keeps them visible to everyone else. Instagram Help on the list names four formats you can share with the list only: posts, notes, reels and stories. In a reel shared with the list, members see each other's reactions. A like, comment or share from one person is visible to the rest along with their username.

The same circle shows up in other settings. Instagram Help on like visibility offers an option that shows your likes on other people's posts and reels only to this list. The format itself is a photo or video that disappears after 24 hours unless you add it to Highlights. Filming, editing and posting are covered in our guide to Instagram Stories.

How to add to Close Friends

You build the list in settings, and the editor sends a story to it with one tap.

From your profile menu

1. Open your profile and tap the menu in the top right corner.
2. Under Who can see your content, tap Close Friends.
3. Tap Select next to the people you want on the list.
4. If someone is not on the screen, tap Search and find them by name.
5. Tap Done at the bottom to save your changes.

On a computer, click More in the bottom left, then Settings, and open the same Who can see your content section. Instagram Help says you can update the list at any time.

While posting a story

Take or upload a photo or video and finish editing it. Before sharing, the editor offers a choice between Your story and Close Friends. The first sends it to your usual audience. The second sends it only to the people on your list. Instagram Help does not describe editing the list from this screen.

How not to tap the wrong option

One tap decides the audience. According to Instagram Help, the button for your list sits at the bottom of the screen, and tapping it sends the photo or video to the list. Read the label before you tap, not after.

How to remove someone from the list and whether they will know

Removing someone step by step

1. Open your profile, then the menu in the top right corner.
2. Open the list under Who can see your content.
3. Tap the blue checkmark next to the person's name to clear it.
4. Tap Done at the bottom to save your changes.

Instagram Help does not name a button that clears the whole list at once.

What the person will see

No notification arrives. Instagram Help on the list says so for both actions, adding and removing. They saw the list badge only on stories, notes and reels shared with the list. After removal, new ones for the list will not reach them. Your regular stories still show up for them with a colorful ring, as before.

Instagram Help does not describe what happens to a live story for the list. It disappears 24 hours after posting.

How to tell you are on someone's Close Friends list

Two signs show your status. In the 2018 announcement, Instagram described a green badge on the story itself and a green ring around the author's photo in the stories tray. Current Instagram Help names the same two signs, and the badge there shows the list name. A regular story comes with a colorful ring.

You cannot see who else is on another person's list. In its announcement of November 30, 2018, Instagram said that only the owner can see the list.

The green ring disappeared

There are two neutral reasons. The ring stays while a list story is live and fades after 24 hours. A new story for all followers brings back the usual colorful ring. The color reflects only the audience of what is live and says nothing about how the author feels about you.

Common mistakes

The story went to everyone

Your viewer list shows who managed to see it: open your story and swipe up on the screen. According to Instagram Help, only you can see who has viewed it, for up to 48 hours after posting. If viewers from outside the list show up, it went to everyone.

After posting, only deletion fixes the mistake. Instagram Help on deletion gives the steps. Tap Your story at the top of Feed, then More or Options in the bottom right of the photo or video. Tap Delete and confirm.

A public profile

Regular stories on a public profile are open to anyone on the platform. According to Instagram Help, a public account's story may also appear in Search and Explore. With a tagged location, it shows up on the map. Send personal moments only to your list. The other option is a private account, where only approved followers see your content.

Screenshots

A person on your list can take a screenshot of anything you share. The list keeps out random viewers, but it cannot stop someone on it from saving a copy. The list goes stale

A circle built a year ago rarely matches your life today. After a job change, a breakup or a falling out, open the list and clear the extra checkmarks. A former coworker still on the list will see your next personal share just like your best friend.

What a stranger sees in your stories: checking your public profile with Sled

If you run a public profile, it helps to know what is visible from outside right now. Sled checks this without signing into your account. The availability check is free. It shows whether the profile has active public stories at the moment of the check.

Anything shared only with your list never appears in the check. If everything live is for your list, the check shows no active public stories. In that case checkout is not offered.

When public stories exist, the service opens them through a private link. No registration, password or login to your account is needed. The report includes:

• All active stories available at check time.
• Story photos and videos.
• Publication date and time for every story.
• Access through a private link.

The check cannot show four things:

• Stories shared only with a list.
• Private accounts.
• Anything older than 24 hours.
• Stories the author deleted.

Where the line is: only the owner decides who is on the list

Only the author decides who is on a Close Friends list. Do not try to find out who is on someone's list through mutual friends, a second account or third-party services. Do not demand to be added, and do not ask for an explanation after a removal.

Meta's Community Standards apply on Instagram too. They name privacy and dignity among their core values and expect people not to harass or degrade others. Do not forward or repost someone's list story or a screenshot of it. The author shared it with a small circle, not with everyone.
