What they are
An ordinary story lives 24 hours and disappears. Highlights cancel that deadline: a story moved there stays in the profile until the author removes it.
Technically they are folders. Each circle under the bio is a separate folder with its own name and cover, holding anywhere from one story to several hundred.

How to add a Highlight
From an active story
- Open your story while it is still active.
- Tap the Highlight icon at the bottom right.
- Pick an existing folder or create a new one and name it.
From the archive, once the day has passed
Stories do not vanish without trace: they move to a personal archive only you can see. Anything can be pulled back from there, even a year later.
Open your profile, tap the menu, choose the archive, find the story and add it to a Highlight with the same icon.
The archive only works if it is switched on. If you disabled it earlier, old stories were never saved and there is nowhere to retrieve them from. Worth checking in advance rather than when you need it.
Cover and name
By default the cover is the first frame of the first story in the folder, and it usually looks poor. It can be changed at any time.
- Press and hold the circle, then choose editing.
- Open the cover option.
- Take a frame from the story itself or upload an image from your gallery.
Names must be short: anything long is cut with an ellipsis. In practice about twelve characters fit in full on most phones.
Who sees Highlights and what the author sees
On a public profile Highlights are open to any visitor, follower or not. On a private one only approved followers see them, like everything else.
One detail few people know: the viewer list for a story inside a Highlight is visible to the author only for the first 24 hours after publication. After that the story remains and the names disappear.
No view notifications arrive
The author never learns that somebody browsed their Highlights a month after publication. A full breakdown of what leaves a trace is in Instagram incognito.
What they are actually for
- Answers to common questions. A folder with prices, delivery and terms removes half the messages.
- Testimonials. Screenshots of thanks live in the profile permanently rather than for a day.
- Profile navigation. The circles work as sections: services, work, about.
- A personal archive. Trips, events and moments gathered by theme.
For a shop or a freelancer this is effectively a storefront visible before the first post. Someone opens the profile and immediately understands what is on offer.
What disappears and what stays
The practical heart of the topic: Highlights are in no hurry, while an ordinary story is in a great deal of it.
Highlight content can be viewed tomorrow, next week or next year. An active story disappears today, and only the author can bring it back from their own archive.
