Why athletes, singers and the platform's own account sit at the top
Sorted by the owners' fields from the same table, the top 20 falls into five groups.
- Musicians: 7 accounts. Among them are Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.
- Media personalities: 5. All five come from one family: Kylie and Kendall Jenner, plus Kim, Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian.
- Athletes: 4. Three footballers and cricketer Virat Kohli.
- Companies: 3. Instagram, a sportswear brand and a popular science magazine.
- Actor: 1. Dwayne Johnson, who also wrestled professionally.
Footballers and clubs
Football fills more rows of the full list than any other sport. Beyond the three footballers in the top 20, it includes Kylian Mbappé, David Beckham, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and the UEFA Champions League. Fans of a club and a national team live in many countries, and every match gives a star a reason to post.
How popularity brings in new people
The platform itself pushes big accounts to grow bigger. In a ranking explainer dated May 31, 2023, Instagram head Adam Mosseri listed the signals behind Explore. One of them is how many people like, comment on, share and save a post, and how quickly. He wrote that these signals matter much more in Explore than in Feed or Stories. A star's post gathers reactions fast and lands in front of people who have never subscribed to that star.
The platform's own account
First place on the whole list goes to @instagram, the official page of the app itself. Its lead over people keeps shrinking: on September 10, 2025, it was 30 million ahead of Ronaldo, and by July 2026 only 7.
The most popular Russian-speaking creators: dated figures only
No Russian account appears in the global top 50 as of July 2026. Figures for Russian-speaking creators have to be gathered from separate publications that state a date. Read them as historical snapshots rather than a live ranking.
| Creator | Field | Audience, millions | Snapshot date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khabib Nurmagomedov | mixed martial artist | 22.1 | October 24, 2020 | Sportbox |
| Olga Buzova | singer | 22 | October 24, 2020 | Sportbox |
| Khabib Nurmagomedov | mixed martial artist | over 34 | December 2022 | English Wikipedia |
| Nastya Ivleeva, main account | TV host and blogger | 17.9 | May 1, 2024 | Russian Wikipedia |
| Nastya Ivleeva, second account | TV host and blogger | 7.7 | May 1, 2024 | Russian Wikipedia |
On October 24, 2020, the day of his title fight with Justin Gaethje, Russian sports outlet Sportbox reported that Khabib Nurmagomedov had passed singer Olga Buzova. By December 2022 he had more than 34 million, according to English Wikipedia, which calls him the most-followed Russian on the platform.
Russian Wikipedia credits Nastya Ivleeva with 17.9 million on her main account and 7.7 on a second one as of May 1, 2024. The two cannot be added into one audience, since a single person can subscribe to both.
A ranking by reactions looks different
In March 2021, the Russian business daily Vedomosti described a ranking of Russian-speaking bloggers by likes and comments in February. Khabib Nurmagomedov came first with 21.6 million reactions. TV host Ksenia Borodina was second with 16.7 million, and makeup artist Goar Avetisyan third with more than 10 million. The compilers tied Borodina's spike to a statement of hers about salary levels.
Reactions show where an argument is happening, while a count shows who once tapped a button. Our guide to what a creator is explains how a creator differs from a celebrity with a big page.
How fast the ranking changes and where the jumps come from
Compare two snapshots of the same Wikipedia list: September 10, 2025 and July 2026. In about ten months, the six leaders moved by millions in both directions. Table values are in millions.
| Account | Sep 10, 2025 | July 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 694 | 685 | minus 9 | |
| Cristiano Ronaldo | 664 | 678 | plus 14 |
| Lionel Messi | 506 | 515 | plus 9 |
| Selena Gomez | 417 | 404 | minus 13 |
| Dwayne Johnson | 392 | 382 | minus 10 |
| Kylie Jenner | 392 | 382 | minus 10 |
Growth and loss run side by side. Ronaldo added 14 million while Selena Gomez lost 13. Guinness World Records logged 621,979,902 for Ronaldo and 429,895,005 for Gomez on February 19, 2024. Since then he has gained about 56 million, and she has lost about 25.
Where the jumps come from
- An event. A fight, a match, a release or a loud statement brings a wave of attention, as Borodina's salary remarks did.
- A platform cleanup. In December 2014, CBS News reported that celebrities lost millions of fans at once as Instagram cleared out fake and spam accounts. Since November 19, 2018, the platform has removed inauthentic engagement boosted through third-party apps.
- Steady churn. People delete accounts and unsubscribe, so counts shrink without any scandal.

Millions of followers versus real viewers: why the count is not reach
The number on a profile shows how many accounts subscribed. Reach, the number of different accounts that saw a post, counts the viewers of that one post. Ranking sits between the two figures.
Meta's Transparency Center describes how Feed gets built. The system gathers posts from accounts a person subscribes to and picks about 700 of the most relevant ones. Roughly 500 of them get a score. Each score rests on predictions for that viewer: time spent on the post, sharing it in a direct message, a visit to the author's profile. The page was last updated on June 29, 2026.
So a subscription does not guarantee a view. Inactive accounts that never open the app stay in the count and never add to reach. Reels work the other way round. According to Mosseri, most of what people watch in that tab comes from accounts they do not follow. A clip from a little-known creator can draw more viewers than the creator has subscribers.
Counts cannot be added up into people. The five Kardashian and Jenner accounts in the top 20 hold more than 1.5 billion subscriptions combined. A fan of the family often subscribes to several sisters and gets counted in each. Our guide to Instagram insights shows where an owner checks the reach of each post.
A big count does not prove a big audience. It shows how many accounts subscribed at some point and says nothing about who still watches.
How to check the audience of any public account
A counter treats a live reader and an abandoned page the same way. The difference shows only in the accounts behind the number.
The Sled deep audit takes a random sample of 200 people from the audience of a public profile and reads each profile separately. You never sign in to your account, since the report runs on public profile data. Two hundred profiles show the makeup of an audience rather than the state of every person by name. The report gives no bot percentage on purpose, because such a figure would be invented.
- A random sample of 200 people from the audience.
- Posts and activity signals for each profile.
- The balance of subscriptions and subscribers.
- Profiles listed for manual review.
The first group looks like a live audience. The second may hold silent readers who watch and never post. The third and fourth call for a check by eye, using the list in the report. Our guide to getting followers on Instagram covers how to attract real people rather than empty profiles.
