Three different things people mix up

Someone searching for stories without signup usually means one of three things. Services exploit that: they promise one and ask for another.

Registration on the site

Creating an account on a third-party site: email, password, sometimes a phone number. Unrelated to Instagram. The risk is moderate: your email leaks and spam arrives.

Logging in through Instagram

A “Log in with Instagram” button, or a form with a username and password. This one is serious. The service gains the right to act as you: follow, send direct messages, publish.

A password in plain text

The worst case. The password goes to someone else’s server and is stored there in some unknown way. Instagram sees a login from an unfamiliar address and often locks the account pending identity confirmation. Recovery takes days.

What viewing without signup looks like

A form with one field. Enter the username, get the stories. No email, no password, no confirmation step.

How to check a service in a minute

1. Look at the form. More than one field means you are being asked for something extra.
2. Make your own profile private and check it through the service. If it shows anything, the data is invented.
3. Look for a “Log in with Instagram” button. A public profile needs none, in any form.
4. Check whether an extension is required. An extension sees every open tab, mail and banking included.

Viewing online on a phone and on a desktop

Watching stories anonymously online works the same on any device: the browser opens the page, and no signup is required either way. Only the details differ.

On a phone

Stories swipe like they do in the app. Saving a file takes a long press. The Instagram app does not need to be closed, it plays no part in this.

On a desktop

The screen is bigger, and all of a profile’s stories show up as a list rather than one at a time. For Highlights, where collections pile up, that is noticeably easier.

Anonymous viewing behaves identically in both cases: the story opens from somewhere other than your account, so you stay out of the viewer list on phone and desktop alike.

What signing up will not unlock anyway

People sometimes agree to register hoping for more. There is no more.

• Private profiles. Only approved followers see their stories, and no registration changes that.
• Stories older than a day. After 24 hours they are gone for everyone equally.
• Who viewed your profile. No such list exists.
