Seven reasons stories don't show up, and how to tell them apart
When you can't see a ring, that's a symptom, not a cause. According to the Instagram Help Center, active Instagram stories put a colorful ring around the author's photo. It also shows at the top of followers' Feeds. No ring means no stories are available to you right now.
The reasons at a glance
- 24 hours have passed and there are no active stories right now.
- The author hid their stories from you specifically.
- The story is for the author's Close Friends list, and you're not on it.
- The account is private and your follow request isn't approved.
- The person blocked you.
- You muted their stories yourself.
- The app is glitching or out of date.
Table of signs
One detail proves nothing. Check four things at once: the page, search, the ring and mutual friends. The last one helps with one thing: fresh comments from the person under mutual friends' posts show the account is alive, not deleted.
| Reason | Profile and posts | Account in search | Story ring | What mutual friends show |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No stories right now | Visible | Found | Missing for everyone | Fresh comments in place |
| Stories hidden from you | Visible | Found | Missing only for you | Fresh comments in place |
| List-only story | Visible | Found | Green, only for people on the list | Fresh comments in place |
| Private account, request pending | Photo, name and bio visible, posts locked | Found | Missing | Fresh comments in place |
| Block | Won't open or looks empty | Not found | Missing | Fresh comments from the person still visible |
| You muted their stories | Visible | Found | Missing from the row above your Feed | Fresh comments in place |
| App glitch | Loads with errors | Found | Fails on many accounts at once | Everything as usual |
From your side, three rows look the same: no stories, stories hidden from you, and a list-only story. The page opens, posts show, and the ring is missing. Nobody outside can tell the last two apart. You can check whether you muted them on their profile. A block or a glitch shows up in search, on the page and in how the app behaves.
There may simply be no stories right now
Most of the time, a missing ring means an ordinary pause. The Help Center page on the story archive states the timing: after 24 hours a story moves to the author's archive automatically. The person may have posted nothing since yesterday, so the ring vanished for everyone.
After a day, only highlights remain on the page. Per the Help Center, a story in highlights stays there until the author removes it. The basics are covered in Instagram stories: what they are and how to post. See also our guides to the archive and highlights.
When a story shows as unavailable
You may see an “unavailable” message when you open a story from a chat or a link and no longer have access to it. Instagram doesn't name the reason in that message. Three known cases fit: 24 hours have passed, the author deleted it, or the account is private and you're not an approved follower. Per the Help Center, once the original story disappears from the app, it's gone from the chat too.
How to check whether a public profile has stories right now
Sled's free check looks at a public profile and tells you whether it has active stories now. You don't sign in to your account, share a password or register. If there are no active stories, you're not asked to pay. A “none” answer covers stories shared with everyone, not list-only ones.

The “Hide story and live from” setting
An author can pick people who won't see their stories. The setting is called “Hide story and live from” in the Help Center article on hiding your story. The same page makes the key point: hiding your story from someone is different from blocking them. The person can still see the profile and posts.
The page opens, posts are there, the account shows up in search, and the ring is missing. The Help Center describes no alert about hiding. You can't know for sure that stories were hidden from you specifically.
Green ring: Close Friends stories
The second way to narrow the audience is a list of chosen people. Per the Help Center, people on the list see a badge on the story and may see a green ring around the author's photo. Others don't see it at all. People aren't notified when they're added to the list or removed from it.
The 2018 launch announcement and the current Help Center agree: no one can request to be added. If you see a green ring on someone's profile, you're on their list. A missing ring proves nothing on its own: you may be off the list, the story may be hidden from you, or there may be no stories right now.
What you can do about it
Technically, nothing. The audience is the author's call, and it's their right. You can ask directly once, and only if you're close. The author's side is covered in our guide to blocking someone. Our basics guide explains who can see stories.
Private account or block
The account is private and your request isn't approved
A private account shows a lock instead of posts. Per the Help Center comparison of public and private accounts, only approved people can follow a private account, and only followers see its photos and videos. The Help Center page on sharing stories in chats adds that on a private account, even a story sent in a chat is visible only to followers. So its stories are for approved followers only.
The person follows you, but that doesn't open their stories to you. Access comes only from your own follow request, approved by the owner. Once it's approved, active stories show up at the top of your Feed. If the following list on that account won't open either, see why you can't see someone's following list.
Signs of a block
Instagram's guide from November 22, 2024 says a blocked person can no longer search for the profile, view its content or send messages. People aren't notified when they're blocked, as the Help Center confirms. For you, that means three signs.
- The account doesn't show up when you search the exact username.
- The page won't open or looks empty.
- You can't mention or tag the person.
One sign settles nothing, since an account also vanishes from search after deletion. Fresh comments from the person on your mutual friends' posts point to a block. Per the Help Center, a blocked person can still see the author's likes and comments on posts shared by public accounts. A full check is in our guide to telling if someone blocked you.
You muted their stories or the app is glitching
Their stories are muted on your side
Mute hides someone's stories from you only. Per the Help Center, muting keeps a person's posts out of your Feed and their stories off the top of it. Instagram won't let them know you muted them. To undo it, take three steps.
- Open the person's page from search or from one of their posts.
- Tap “Following” below the bio, then “Mute”.
- Turn off the toggle next to “Stories”.
To stop seeing someone's stories, switch the same toggle on. You can also mute from Feed: tap “Options” next to a post, then “Hide”, “Mute [username]” and “Mute posts and story”. The Help Center notes that muting is not unfollowing.
A glitch or an old version of the app
A glitch gives itself away by scale. Stories fail to load on many accounts at once. Then the problem sits in the app or the connection, not in one person.
- Update the app from the app store.
- Close the app fully and open it again.
- Check your connection by switching between mobile data and Wi-Fi.
- Log in on the Instagram website and open their page in a browser.
The ring shows on the website but not in the app: the app is at fault. If the ring is missing on the website too, a glitch isn't the cause. Go back to the table of signs.
What not to do
The author chose who sees their stories. Workarounds go around that choice. Here are three of them.
- A second account to watch someone's stories. Per the Help Center, an author who blocks someone in the app can also block that person's other accounts, including new ones.
- Asking mutual friends to forward stories. They end up as go-betweens in someone else's decision.
- Services that promise to show list-only or private-account stories. Only approved followers and people on the list see them, so the promise is false.
Sled doesn't show list-only or private-account stories either. Telegram and other messengers have their own story privacy settings. This article covers Instagram only.
Common questions about missing stories
Can I find out for sure that someone hid their stories from me on Instagram?
No. Hiding stories doesn't block you, and the profile and posts stay visible. The Help Center describes no alert about it. All you have is the pattern: the page opens, the account shows up in search, and the ring is missing.
Why can't I see my friends' stories when others can?
There are three reasons. The stories are list-only, and you're not on the list. The author hid stories from you with “Hide story and live from”. Or you muted them yourself, so check “Mute” on your friend's profile.
The ring was there and then disappeared. What happened?
Most often 24 hours passed and the story moved to the author's archive. The author may also have deleted it or hidden their stories from you.
Why are highlights missing on someone's profile?
Highlights are built by the author from their own stories and stay on the page until removed. The Help Center adds that people allowed to see the author's story can also see the highlights. If the account is private and your request isn't approved, its highlights stay closed to you until the owner approves you, just like its stories.
