Followed and unfollowed on Instagram: why people do it and what each side sees

When someone followed and unfollowed you, one of six reasons is usually behind it. The account wanted a follow back, a bot was at work, a thumb slipped, or the person changed their mind after opening your page. Two cases have nothing to do with a decision about your page: Instagram removed an inauthentic follow, or the owner deactivated or deleted the account. Instagram sends a follow notification but stays silent about an unfollow, so all that remains is a name in your notifications.

In short

When someone followed and unfollowed you, the reason is usually one of six. It may be a chase for a follow back, a bot, a stray tap or a change of mind. It may also be an inauthentic follow removed by Instagram, or a deactivated or deleted account. You see a name in your notifications and never hear about the exit. A person who tapped by mistake leaves only that entry or a request. A snapshot report shows those who stayed until a check, but not a follow undone within one day.

Why someone followed and unfollowed you: six reasons

Waiting for a follow back

An account follows hundreds of strangers and waits. Some return the favor, and its follower count grows. A few days later it drops them, while the new followers stay. This is called mass following.

Meta's spam policy bans selling, buying or exchanging engagement, including follows. It also counts very high-frequency activity as spam, whether manual or automated. Why follow-for-follow groups backfire is covered in our guide to mutual follows.

A bot follows and leaves right away

Bots do the same job with no person involved. The program follows accounts from a list and drops them soon after, without opening a single page. Its aim is to put a username in your notifications and get you to open that page. Three signs give a bot away.

  • An unfamiliar account shows up again and again, days or weeks apart.
  • The page is empty: no posts, or a handful of photos without captions.
  • The bio carries a link to a shop, a channel or an offer to earn money.

An accidental tap

The Follow button sits next to a creator's name in Reels, in suggested accounts and in Explore. Meta's Transparency Center says suggested accounts appear in several sections of the app. A person scrolls, brushes the button with a thumb and taps again to undo it. The follow lasted seconds, yet the notification may already have gone out.

A change of mind after a look at the profile

Someone follows from a reel they liked, then opens the profile and sees the other posts. Their interests do not match, and they leave a minute or a day later. It is a decision about the page, not a verdict on you.

Instagram removed inauthentic follows

Instagram's Help Center page on changing counts says the platform removes inauthentic likes, follows and comments. Instagram announced a large cleanup on 19 November 2018, aimed at activity from third-party apps. The same page adds that Instagram regularly removes accounts it has disabled. Why your total moves on its own is covered in our guide to follower count.

The account was deactivated, deleted, or you were blocked

According to Instagram's Help Center on deactivation, the account's photos, comments and likes stay hidden until the owner logs back in. A deleted account is hidden from other people right after the request, and 30 days later the profile and all its data are erased for good. A block comes with no alert, as the Help Center page on blocking confirms. In your follower list all three cases look the same: the name is gone. The signs are listed in our guide to telling whether someone blocked you.

How a follow and an unfollow look in notifications

The follow notification

Instagram's Help Center page on notifications lists new followers and follow requests among the triggers. The entry appears behind the heart icon, and its username opens that profile. A push alert on the phone is separate from the entry and is switched on in settings.

How this differs from an ordinary unfollow

Instagram tells no one when a follower leaves. Instagram's Help Center says plainly that people are not notified when you stop following them. A long-time follower leaves without a trace, and only the count changes.

A quick exit after a follow can leave a trace. The entry may have arrived before the follow was undone. Instagram's Help Center does not say whether it disappears afterward, so trust the follower list over the notifications feed.

Followed someone by accident and unfollowed: what they see

Now for the other side: the person who tapped by mistake. What the owner learns comes down to one setting: a public or a private profile.

A public profile

Here the tap takes effect at once, with no approval. An alert may have reached the owner, since new followers are a trigger. Leaving sends nothing.

A private profile

According to Instagram's Help Center on public and private accounts, only people the owner approves can follow a private account. Your tap sent a follow request, and the owner sees it in notifications. Until it is approved, you can cancel it from that person's page.

If you unfollowed by accident

The same Follow button fixes the slip. A public account takes you back at once. A private one needs a new request, and until approval its posts and stories stay closed to you. A separate case: you tap Follow and it drops off at once. That is an action limit or a glitch on your own account, not someone else's decision.

What to do about accounts that keep following and unfollowing

Steps go from mildest to strongest. Most of them have their own guide.

  1. Let a single case go: one tap needs no response.
  2. Do not follow back blindly. Open the page first and look at the posts. How to find people who do not return your follow is covered in our guide to non-mutual follows.
  3. Remove the follower when an unfamiliar account shows up a second time. Per Instagram's Help Center, a removed follower is not notified. The steps are in our guide to removing a follower.
  4. Block an account that follows again after removal. After a block it cannot find your page or return. What the person sees is covered in our guide to blocking.
  5. Report spam when the account pushes ads or dubious links. The process is in our guide to reporting.
  6. Make your account private so you approve every new follower. A bot then only sends a request you can decline. A business profile has to switch back to a personal account first.

Sometimes the picture is different: strangers appear among the accounts you follow. Where they come from is covered in our guide to follows you did not make.

If an ex followed you and then left

The facts are the same as with anyone else. The alert came, the exit was silent, and one action does not reveal a reason. If you want no contact, block the account.

How to spot people who followed and then left

A notification shows the arrival, while the exit only shows in your follower list.

By hand

  1. Open your notifications and note the new follower's username.
  2. Go to your own page and tap the number of followers.
  3. Type the username into the search bar above the list: no match means the follower left or the account is unavailable.

The count gives a total and no names. Take a page with 800 followers. Over a week two people left and two arrived, and the number did not move.

Comparing two snapshots: what the report shows

Sled's report captures your follower list on different days and compares the snapshots. Anyone who was in the first and missing from the second is named in the report. Tracking starts with the first snapshot, so people who left before you start are not in the report. History builds up by check date, and an email with the names lands in your inbox.

We compare a list of up to 2,500 followers in full every day and a bigger one every 1–4 days. That sets a limit: a follow undone between two comparisons stays invisible, since the account is absent from both snapshots. Someone who stayed until a check and left later shows up, with the interval between two checks. A list alone cannot tell a departure from a deleted or unavailable account, and the report does not guess which one it was.

The list does not say why a name left

The report compares snapshots of your public page for 30 days and emails you the names that left.

Get the names that left

To start, you need your own page, public for the whole monitoring period. Payment is one-off for 30 days with no auto-renewal. No Instagram login or password is needed. The report does not list new followers, so it does not replace notifications. Many follower-tracking apps work differently and ask for your password.

Where the line is

The report works only for your own public page and does not track other people's follows. Do not bring in a second account or friends to check on someone. Do not demand an explanation either: they are free to follow or stop following. And do not chase follow backs with mass following: Meta's spam policy bans trading follows.

Questions about short-lived follows

Will they be notified if I follow someone by accident and cancel right away?

On a public account, an entry about the new follower may arrive before you cancel. Instagram's Help Center describes no alert when you stop following. A private account gets a request instead, and you can cancel it before approval.

Can I see who followed and then unfollowed me?

Instagram keeps no feed of such events. You have the entry in notifications and a check of your follower list. Comparing snapshots catches only those who were still there at a check.

Will a follower who deactivated their account come back?

The Help Center page on deactivation says photos and comments stay hidden until the owner logs back in. It does not say whether the person reappears in follower lists after that. The only way to know is to check the list once they return.

Why does someone follow and leave several times in a row?

Repeats point to a bot or an account chasing follow backs. Each follow aims to put its name in front of you again. Blocking ends the cycle, since a blocked account cannot search for your profile. Removing a follower only clears it from your list.
